OJT

A job posting either has On the Job Training (OJT) listed in the description or it doesn’t (or something to that affect). Stating that “I can be trained” during the job interview for a job posting that doesn’t have OJT listed then complaining when you don’t get hired because you don’t already have the skills necessary is, well, pathetic.

When I retire in a few years, I will not be training my replacement on the basics of what I do. There’s no negotiation over this. I won’t do it. Period. If a person doesn’t already possess the basic skills necessary to do the basic parts of my job, they’re not going to get hired (or if they somehow bullshit their way into the job, they’re going to get found out immediately, then fired). I don’t give a flying fuck how butt hurt someone gets over this. My job, in no-way-shape-or-form, is for someone that lacks the basic skills, nor will I take the time to teach someone the basic skills. Advanced stuff, sure, I will teach them, maybe twice, if they don’t get it in a couple of sessions, they can hit the bricks.

I am a salaried employee, and so shall be my replacement. I can work upwards of seven days in a week. It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes it’s necessary. I sometimes have to do work at 7am and as late as 9pm, depending upon what is needed from the other employees. Sometimes, I do work on Sundays because no one else is working, it’s a great time to take resources offline and make adjustments without hearing the screams of coworkers. I don’t turn off my phone during vacations, although one time I did take a cruise and didn’t have the ability to make phone calls 24/7, so there was limited work during that vacation. I may be at the beach with the family, get a call and I handle the problem. It usually takes less than a few minutes to get someone back on track and then, I resume vacationing. My employers, (my direct superiors are the owners) are good people. They do not take advantage of my services, they’re fair, they listen to what I have to say (because I have learned to keep it brief and only bring up the most important things that need their attention), and they typically go with my recommendations. I like what I do and being good to me, they make me want to keep things working the way they should work, without bitching or moaning, no complaints from me or my family about working during off times. Everything in this paragraph is going to make replacing me extremely tough, because, I doubt we’ll ever be able to find someone that is willing to do my job plus everything in this paragraph for the money I make. West Virginia is so far behind in the pay scale for my job, I could double it and not be up to the pay I could get in other states. Good luck in finding someone that’s not greedy to do my job with the caveats listed above. And that’s  not an attempt to get more money, it’s simply stating a fact. I am on my way out and have no plans to further my career by holding out for more money. I do not want to work any more. I want to go fishing, ride motorcycles, travel, sit in my shop and work amateur radio and not worry about “work”. A person only has so much time on this Earth, don’t waste it by chasing the dollar.
